As part of our ongoing commitment to workplace safety and regulatory compliance, we want to address an important topic that affects corrugated press operations: the risks and requirements around using lasers to clean anilox rolls while they are still installed in the press.
When choosing anilox cleaning service providers, compliance isn’t optional. Laser use in industrial facilities is regulated.
· OSHA Standards — Any laser classified as a “Laser Hazard” must be controlled under OSHA’s regulations for ionizing and non-ionizing radiation; this includes hazard analysis, barriers, controls, and PPE.
· ANSI Z136 Series — Industrial laser safety standards (e.g., ANSI Z136.1) require documented hazard evaluation, engineering controls, and a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) to oversee operations.
· Machine Guarding Requirements — OSHA machine guarding standards require that press guards vs laser access be controlled so employees cannot be exposed to energy sources, including laser beams.
· Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) — When cleaning inside a press requires access to moving machine parts, LOTO procedures must be used and documented.
· Training & Certification — Operators and supervisors must receive documented training in laser safety, emergency procedures, and permitted tasks.
· MSDS/SDS Documentation — Supporting documentation on hazards and control measures for any cleaning method used must be maintained and accessible.
· Written Safety Plans — Laser Hazard Controls and Written Laser Safety Program required if any Class 3B or Class 4 lasers are used in facility operations.
